Morwellham Quay is a captivating historic river port on the Tamar valley in Devon. It is rumoured to be haunted by several depressed souls; many people have claimed to have heard the nestled voices and footsteps of some of the past inhabitants of Morwellham Quay. There has been a settlement at Morwellham for over 1000 years, it was originally set up in 961 by the Benedictine Monks of Tavistock Abbey; to ferry goods to and from Plymouth along the River Tamar. In the Victorian era, it became one of the richest copper mines of Queen Victoria’s reign. The copper mine first opened in 1718 and was worked for 150 years, until it closed in 1868. The mine had eight levels and had many miners and children pass through, in its operational years. Many lost their lives due to the hazards of working in an extremely dangerous and unsanitary environment. Children were a big part of life at Morwellham, as child labour was cheap and children were easy to control. Many spent their days carrying out back breaking labour for barely any money. Sadly many of the workers and children, at Morwellham lived and worked under periling conditions and were treated as nothing more than slaves. Pitifully, countless children, men and women died in terrible accidents or from serious illnesses. Come join us to find out more about the lost souls that wonder this genuinely charming place.
